East Sussex County Council Employment Services

Lea Graham was appointed as PR consultant for the Council's Employment Services for People with Disabilities. The original brief was to create awareness of the unique service and to increase job opportunities available for their disabled clients.

The first activity undertaken was the creation of a corporate identity and branding for the Service, which was headed by Mike Barratt and his team. A dove (the bird of freedom) flying through the clouds was designed by Lea Graham, which met with unanimous approval from the general manager and his team.

It was apparent to Lea Graham that the Service was supported by some very enlightened employers – both large and small – who were successfully employing people with disabilities. These were used as case studies for the local, national and trade media.

A major initiative developed by Lea Graham was the creation of the Disability Business Awards. This scheme was devised to honour outstanding employers in two sectors – Public and Commercial. As well as a winner and runner-up in each sector, there were also special commendations.

Using Lea Graham's impressive contacts, the company arranged the launch of the Employment Services and its inaugural awards in The House of Lords – hosted by Lord Teviot. Lea Graham was able to demonstrate to the client the economic benefits of holding a reception in central London versus a local Sussex hotel or conference centre.

Baroness Cumberlege was the Guest of Honour to launch the Employment Services and present the awards to all the category winners. The prestige of holding the event in such a high profile venue not only encouraged a high acceptance rate but also highlighted the Council's innovative schemes to senior politicians and peers. Lea Graham arranged and co-ordinated every detail of the event.

The creation of Newslink – a dedicated publication for Employment Services for People with Disabilities was also launched at The House of Lords.

Following the successful launch at The House of Lords, a second awards event was organised by Lea Graham. It took place in the splendid Elizabethan setting of Michelham Priory and TV personality Michael Aspel was the Guest of Honour.
